CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION: CONTACT RT TO COVER THE STAMPEDE IN MECCA



How many of us have been gratified by the progressive and insightful coverage that the RussiaToday (RT) channel has provided us in recent years? Their refreshing willingness to take on the tough issues have been a bright light in the darkness of American media. However, on the biggest current event--the approximately 1,000 pilgrims (numbers of dead and injured continue to grow so an exact count is not possible yet) who were killed or injured on the day of Arafah--RT has chosen to remain strangely silent.

Read here a report in The Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/25/saudi-arabia-hajj-stampede-mecca-safety, which puts the arrival of a Saudi prince and his 350 member security force in the area of the stampede. However they carefully sidestep putting blame on the Saudis. At the very least, the fact that the prince's entourage was present should be mentioned. But to sweep the whole thing under the rug and not report on it? That is unacceptable from any news agency, let alone a progressive one like RT.

Once again Iran and Iranian news agency PressTV are daring to speak truth to power while others remain silent. They are one of the lone voices to state the facts of the event: that a Saudi prince's motorcade was the reason for the stampede in the area of the Bridge of Jamarah, where the pilgrims perform the symbolic stoning of the Shaytan. 
Speak out and demand that RT send reporters (or perhaps release footage that they already have but which might be implicating "important people"). As always, speak politely, but make your message clear to them. 

RT has a reputation for a progressive perspective and that is brought under question when a tragedy of this magnitude is being ignored.
